Colonial Downs Pracing in the Dark Selections for Friday Night

June 08, 2012 | Gary Quill

Prior to the nine (9) exciting turf chase scenes at Colonial Downs on Friday night, the Belmont Stakes Eve card at Belmont Park is filled with attractive short-term investment options. The feature race is the G2 Brooklyn Handicap (race 10) run at the same 1½ mile distance as the Belmont Stakes. It’s interesting to note that I’ll Have Another’s jockey, Mario Gutierrez has a mount (#10 – Boxeur des Rues) in this race. Smart move on the part of Team O’Neill to give Mario the opportunity to travel the 12 furlongs over the 1½ mile Belmont dirt oval, as many inexperienced jocks misjudge there move too early versus one mile tracks.

Now that I’ll Have Another will not run in the Belmont Stakes due to a tendon injury in this front left leg, it really doesn’t matter that Gutierrez has the mount on Boxeur des Rues in the Brooklyn Handicap. Now for the 25 year old Mexican jockey, it’s just another race.

When it comes to distance races of 1¼ miles or more for older horses, I tend to land on the ones who have already run that distance, regardless of where they placed, they have experienced the grueling test and will be better for it. Hence, I’m using #2 – Hailstone (15-1) even though this will be his 1st lifetime start on natural dirt, he has a 5th place finish in a G1 turf race going 1½ miles as well as a 2nd in a G2 on turf. Only two (2) others fit this scenario, #5 – Birdrun (4-1) who is 2 for 2 at the distance and #6 – Eldaafer (12-1) has 2 wins in 7 starts going 1½ miles. Birdrun appears to be off form plus his there are a few others who will contest him for the early lead, so I’ve tossed him. Though Eldaafer appears to be off form as well, his record at Belmont (3 wins, 3 thirds in 8 starts) and a quicker pace than he’s been running behind recently is reason enough to use him.

Recapping selections from Thursday, June 7th had 6 winners (3 Top Selections) with $2 WIN pay-offs being $14.80 (1st race), $3.60 (2nd), $4.00 (3rd), $4.80 (4th), $2.80 (7th) and $17.80 (9th). Both the BEST BET of the Day (1 0-0-0) and LONGSHOT PICK (1 0-0-0) tanked, finishing off the board.
