Within the next 24 ago the 16th Summer meeting at Colonial Downs will come to a close with twelve (12) exciting chase scenes.

For the most part, Mother Nature cooperated with the track in New Kent, VA as only two (2) racing days days were lost due to the extreme heat. Otherwise, officials have to be pleased with their racing cards where over 90% of the races were contested on the turf. Sheldon Russell has clinched the jockey title with 51 wins, 21 more than his nearest competitor, Horatio Karamanos. Hugh McMahon captured the training title as he led 22 into the Winners Circle, 6 more than A. Ferris Allen III.

Live horse racing in Maryland returns when the State Fair opens on Friday, August 23rd at Timonium Fair Grounds for a 10 day meet, ending on Labor Day (Monday, September 3rd). Laurel Park’s Fall meeting will run through the end of 2012. Opening day will be on Wednesday, September 5th.

Recapping my selections from Friday, July 27th had 6 winners (1 Top Selection; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $10.40 (2nd race), $2.80 (3rd), $3.80 (4th), $9.40 (8th), $6.20 (9th), and $7.20 (10th). The BEST BET of the Day (23 6-4-1) broke slowest among the field of 11, navigated through traffic from the ¼ pole to mid-stretch but was no match for the winner, settling for second, returning $3.60 to PLACE and $3.00 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (23 2-3-4) went off a healthy 9-1, battled for the lead throughout the early stages of the race, weakened late but held on for 3rd returning $4.80 to SHOW.

Whether you drive to the beach, fly to an exotic island resort or take a cruise… they are never long enough! A really good vacation is just like a good day at the track. For both you seem to spend as much time preparing and travelling to your destination than the actual time spent there. The reality is you do spend more time enjoying yourself, it just seems like time flies. Then when it’s over, you’re left with an empty feeling inside, drained but yearning for more… eagerly awaiting your next trip.

Even though I still have visions of two-legged filly’s romping bareback (i.e. in bikini’s) along the South Jersey shoreline, it’s back to the four-legged filly’s… mares, colts and geldings.

Ok, ok let’s get back to horse racing. Recapping my selections from Saturday, July 7th just prior to vacation, had just 4 winners (2 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $8.20 (2nd race), $6.40 (3rd), $4.80 (6th), and $2.60 (8th). The BEST BET of the Day (17 5-3-1) ran a game 3rd in a field of 7 after being steadied at the start of the 5 1/2 furlong contest, returning $2.80 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (17 1-3-3) mounted a nice rally, albeit 6 wide around the turn which cost her as she hung late, finishing 4th @ 10-1 just 2 3/4 lengths behind the winner.

Vacation has come at a perfect time after two consecutive sub-par handicapping days. Now is a good time to clear my head of bad habits and return fresh for the final days of the Colonial Downs meet.

UPDATED 6:45pm EDT, 07/07/2012: Please note selections have been altered AFTER scratches were announced.

Ever have someone ask you, “Is it hot enough for ya?!” Try asking that question of someone who’s been without electricity for over a week, during the longest heat wave the East Coast has experienced in sometime. Go ahead and ask it, if you want your nosed rearranged on your face. Instead of asking that dumb question and risking bodily harm, try to cool down on a Saturday night with some hot selections at Colonial Downs. Pardon the pun which is as pathetic as my selections were from the Friday night races. Saturday is a new day and hopefully more pari-mutuel tickets to be cashed.

Recapping selections from Friday, July 6th had just 5 winners (2 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $4.60 (2nd race), $7.00 (4th), $11.60 (6th), $3.20 (8th), and $3.20 (9th). The BEST BET of the Day (16 5-3-0) was sent off @ 4-1, but never looked comfortable and failed to show the late rally she displayed in her debut, most likely earning the dubious Past Performance Comment “Even Effort”. The LONGSHOT PICK (16 1-3-3) stalked the early leader, and eventual winner for the first 7 furlongs, but stopped in mid-stretch finishing dead last in this one mile event.

This blog made its debut in January 2008. Since then I’ve authored hundreds of them, all focused on thoroughbred horse racing and all but ignored harness racing. That is until now… at least just this one time.

On Thursday afternoon at The Meadows harness racing track, driver Dave Palone set a North American harness racing record when he piloted Herculotte Hanover to the winner’s circle for his 15,181st career victory, breaking the mark held by Herve Filion. The 50-year-old Palone tied the record during the third race then broke it on a filly making her first start.

The Waynesburg, Pa., native began driving in 1982 and earned his first victory in 1983. He’s become a dominant force in the sport over the last three decades, capturing nearly 40 percent of the races he drives in while becoming just the third driver in history to surpass 15,000 wins.

Heinz Wewering of Germany holds the world record for career harness racing wins, with over 16,000 and counting. It’s a mark Palone intends to chase as long as his body lets him. “I’m driving as good as I have at any point in my career,” he said. That’s saying something. Palone, who was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 2010, has been the leading rider at The Meadows for 23 straight years and has won at least 532 races a year over the last two decades.

Recapping of selections from Wednesday, July 4th had 5 winners (2 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $9.80 (2nd race), $5.40 (4th), $2.60 (6th), $4.20 (7th) and $8.80 (8th). The BEST BET of the Day (15 5-2-0) was sent off @ 5-1, ran a good stalking race but could not catch the winner, settling for second returning $4.40 to PLACE and $3.00 for the SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (15 1-3-3) turned out to be a shorter price (3-1 PT v. 6-1 M/L) due to a couple scratches, but nonetheless was a winner in spite of get left at the gate in a 5½ furlong turf sprint, rallied big time to prevail by a nose, returning $8.80 to WIN, $3.80 PLACE and $2.80 to SHOW.

For a day that seems to revolve around what to cook on the grill, please take a moment to be thankful that our forefathers had the courage to declare this great country’s independence 236 years ago today.

On July 3rd the entertainment industry lost an icon, Andy Griffith. Upon hearing of his death, most likely those under the age of 25 thought, “Who?!”. If you are between the ages of 26 and 45, your knowledge of Andy Griffith is from the legal drama show Matlock. While anyone over 45 certainly has fond memories of watching The Andy Griffith Show. I fall into the latter, but my favorite memory of Andy Griffith was a stand-up comedy act he performed called, “What It Was Was Football”. Turn up your volume and enjoy…

COLONIAL DOWNS cancelled their SUNDAY afternoon card due to the power outage which hit the facility on Saturday night shortly after the running of the 4th race. As a result the remainder of the SATURDAY night card, races 5 thru 10 were cancelled.

Word of today’s cancellation came Stu Slagle of the Colonial Downs racing office via the tracks facebook page. There was no mention of if/when the day would be lost or made up prior to the last day of the meet (July 28th). Power had been restored to the New Kent, VA track just prior to the announcement. Racing is scheduled to resume on Wednesday as the track takes advantage of the 4th of July holiday and will be dark on Thursday. One would think that instead of losing a day in this short meet, track management should make-up SUNDAY’s lost card on Thursday?!

With the extreme heat still across the country, many tracks have been cancelling or shifting their cards to the night hours… that is tracks who have lights. On Saturday both Delaware Park and Parx cancelled. With the forecast all along the East Coast is for high temperatures in the upper 90′s with high humidity, Parx and Charlestown joined Colonial Downs in cancelling their Sunday card.

Recapping selections from Saturday, June 30th four races that were run had 2 winners (0 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $2.60 (1st race) and $7.80 (2nd). The BEST BET of the Day (14 5-2-0) was scheduled to run in the 6th race, but races were cancelled from the 5th race on. The LONGSHOT PICK (14 0-3-3) ran in the 1st race, if you want to call finishing 6th by 38 lengths “running”, more like “walking”.

He was billed the ‘Great White Hope” by his owner having the same name. Back in November he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in gate-to-wire fashion, stamping himself the early favorite for the 2012 Kentucky Derby. He ran in the Derby, was in contention entering the stretch, but his pedigree shortcoming for getting 10 furlongs reared it’s ugly head as he faded to 9th.

Recall his name yet?! Does Hansen ring a bell?! Well he’s baaaaacccckk. Making his first start since the Derby, he’s the 2-5 Morning Line favorite in the G3 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows, just outside of Des Moines, IA on Saturday. The 3 year old gray (well nearly white) son of Tapit faces only five (5) rivals, none of which sniffed a Triple Crown race. Maybe if you are a hard-core horse racing fan, you might recognize #3 – Hero Of Order (8-1) who won the G2 Louisiana Derby as a 109-1 longshot on April Fool’s Day. I follow horse racing rather closely and I haven’t heard of the other three (3), but there was a rumor one of them did beat Francis the Mule and Mister Ed earlier in the year.
.
Recapping selections from Friday, June 29th had 7 winners (4 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $3.40 (2nd race), $6.40 (3rd), $11.80 (4th), $4.00 (5th), $7.20 (6th), $8.60 (7th) and $4.40 via Dead Heat @ 4-1 (8th). The BEST BET of the Day (14 5-2-0) had no excuse as sat in a perfect stalking spot, moved forward into contention at the head of the stretch but t by weakened in the final 1/16th fading to 6th @ 7-1. The LONGSHOT PICK (13 0-3-3) took the lead right from the gate @ 10-1, was pressured early, put away that rival but could not hold off the 1-1 post time favorite, losing by a length, returning $6.60 to PLACE and $4.20 to SHOW.

If you cannot get to the beach or cool off in a swimming pool, then staying home and watching an old movie might be the smartest move.

In my humble opinion, here are the Top Five Horse Racing movies of all time…

1. Let It Ride

2. Seabisuit – A Longshot Becomes A Legend

3. Phar Lap – Hero To A Nation

4. Secretariat – The Impossible True Story

Recapping selections from Thursday, June 28th had 6 winners (4 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $11.80 (1st race), $33.40 (2nd), $20.20 (3rd), $3.40 (4th), $11.80 (6th) and $11.60 (8th). The BEST BET of the Day (13 5-2-0) proved to only 2nd best @ 5-1 behind a 21-1 shot that snuck thru along the rail, but being runner-up was still rewarded by returning $9.80 PLACE and $5.60 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (12 0-2-3) was in a great stalking position, but checked between rivals at the ¼ pole and was finished from that point.
Thankfully, Colonial Downs runs in the evening hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It MIGHT behoove track management to consider moving the Sunday 12:55pm EDT 1st race Post to later in the day. The predicted record heat in the Louisville, KY area has prompted Churchill Downs officials cancel the Thursday racing card, move the Friday and Sunday daytime cards and Saturday’s 6:00pm start all to a 6:30pm EDT 1st post.

Recapping selections from Sunday, June 24th had 7 winners (2 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $4.00 (1st race), $10.20 (3rd), $6.00 (4th), $21.80 (5th), $4.80 (6th), $10.00 (7th), $5.40 (9th). The BEST BET of the Day (12 5-1-0) on a day when early speed was holding, this one was lone speed going a mile and gave it up midway down the stretch and faded to 4th @ 6-1. The LONGSHOT PICK (11 0-2-3) was a More Than Ready offspring, 1st time on turf. Jumped out of the get in good order, stalked the early speed but had enough when they turned for home and stopped.
