Horse Racing Memories on Father’s Day – Colonial Downs Father’s Day Selections for Sunday June 17th

June 17, 2012 | Gary Quill

Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s whoever introduced their sons and/or daughters to thoroughbred horse racing. Who on their only off day, usually a Saturday, to enjoy a day of solitude at the track, decided to share their passion for horse racing with their children.

Many in today’s society believe that patience is not one of the better qualities that Dad’s possess. Well “society” has never seen a Dad with his kids at a race track. Sharing that first track program, teaching how to read Past Performances, that first trip to the paddock, first post parade, first race, first winning ticket, first congratulatory “Big Smokey” hot dog. Seeing your son or daughter gather up dozens of losing pari-mutuel tickets from the grandstand apron blacktop as if they were new fallen leaves from trees, fit for a scrapbook. Oh to have kept those old style tickets from the 60′s.

These are the scenes “society” never gets to see. These are moments that bond fathers and sons, fathers and daughter. These are priceless moments. Moments that I fondly remember with my Dad during a summer Saturday at Timonium, a blustery winter day at Bowie, a crisp autumn day at Laurel and a sensational spring day at Old Hilltop (i.e. Pimlico).

Thank you Dad for the memories. Past, present and future ones.
Happy Father’s Day!

Recapping selections from Saturday, June 16th had 7 winners (5 Top Selections) with $2 WIN pay-offs being $5.60 (1st race), $9.80 (3rd), $11.40 (5th), $15.40 (6th), $5.20 (8th), $5.60 (9th) and $11.00 (10th). The BEST BET of the Day (7 5-0-0) took little time to get the lead and was in total control in her North American debut victory paying $9.80 to WIN, $5.20 PLACE and $3.20 for the SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (7 0-1-2) didn’t take advantage of a quick early pace as I anticipated to make his typical late run, but it just wasn’t there in this race @ 8-1.
