Friday Laurel Picks After 9 Winners Thursday; Who Needs March Madness?!

March 15, 2012 | Gary Quill

The second least productive work day of the year is typically the Friday after the first day of the NCAA Men’s DI Basketball Tourney, aka March Madness. The fact that those whose bracket got busted as a result of Thursday’s games is the reason why Friday ranks second.

This year I resisted the temptation of filling out a March Madness bracket pool and instead continued to focus on the horse races at Laurel Park and research to distinguish between the Derby contenders and pretenders.

The equine version of March Madness, referred to as The Road To The Roses lasts until the first Saturday of May with the running of the Kentucky Derby (May 5th). Since the first of the year, there have been a couple dozen races that have eliminated the pretenders. Even though there are still 50 days until the Derby, serious contenders will have had completed their final prep race no later than April 14th. Therefore, within the next 30 days the nation should know what twenty (20) 3 year olds will Run For The Roses.

Thursday’s 9-race card picks had 9 winners (2 Top Selections) with $2 Early Double ($17.00), $2 Late Double ($7.40), $2 Exactas in 2nd ($16.20), 4th ($26.40), 6th ($113.60), 7th ($42.60), 8th ($11.00) and 9th ($6.20) races; $1 Trifectas in 2nd ($20.00) and 6th ($218.80) races; $1 Pick-3 in races 3-5 ($33.90), races 4-6 ($39.20) and races 7-9 ($32.90); $1 Pick-4 in races 2-5 ($88.40) and races 6-9 ($145.30) and $1 Pick-5 in races 5-9 ($259.60). The BEST BET of the Day WON @ 3-1 paying $8.60 4.20 and 2.40 and the LONGSHOT PICK ran second @ 12-1 paying $10.00 PLACE and 5.80 SHOW.
