Friday Picks and $216 Winner at Laurel Park

March 22, 2012 | Gary Quill

This past Wednesday seemed like a good day to visit my folks in south Jersey and spend the day at the races with my best friend and horse racing mentor, my Dad. In fact, it was a great day. Too bad the horses I wagered on did not cooperate.

Capping off a very frustrating “short-term investing” day at the Atlantic City Race Course of simulcasting fun, was seeing a 107-1 shot (#2 – Wire Funds) take the nightcap at Laurel Park. The #4 in the background of the photo below is “my horse” (Alston Gunter; 4-1) who easily took the lead in mid-stretch of the 5½ furlong turf sprint, only to succumb to Wire Funds improbable rally. If Alston Gunter wins, I cash a nice Late Double ticket. The 3rd place finisher was #1 – Legal Review who went off at 35-1, was also on my ticket. So “if if’s and but’s were candies and nuts, blah, blah, blah”.

Wire Funds was making his first start on the turf after compiling a 1 for 18 career record racing on the dirt. The 4 year old geldings resume’ was filled with sprint efforts where he’d show just brief early speed then quickly fold like a chaise lounge chair. Conversely in this grass race he got off slowly but steadily moved forward, picking off rivals one by one. Wire Funds returned $216.80 on a $2 WIN wager and topped a $1,226.40 exacta (2-4), $10,831.40 trifecta (2-4-1) and $32,759.40 superfecta (2-4-1-9).

Thursday’s 9-race card post had just 2 winners (1 Top Selection) with $2 Exactas in 6th ($51.20) and 7th ($45.60) races. The BEST BET of the Day went off 11-1 from 4-1 M/L and was off the board (OTB) while the LONGSHOT PICK (15-1 M/L went off 5-2 PT favorite) ran third paying $3.00 SHOW. Go figure!
