Gotham and Sham Stakes are Derby Preps this weekend

March 06, 2010 | Gary Quill

Two Derby prep races this weekend don’t feature any of the top stars on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, but an emerging star may surface.

The $250,000 Grade 3 Gotham Stakes features a field of ten going 1 1/16 mile. The lukewarm favorite is #4 – Awesome Act (M/L 7-2) making his 2010 debut was last seen finishing a fast closing 4th in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf last November. Whirlaway winner #6 – Peppi Knows (10-1) continues to get no respect while never off the board with 4 wins in 6 career starts. Newcomers to consider who are making stakes debut are Richard Dutrow trained #2 – Yawanna Twist (5-1) who is 2 for 2; #3 – Nacho Friend (8-1) and #5 I’ve Got The Fever (12-1).

Go with the proven commodity, # 6 – Peppi Knows  with #4 – Awesome Act, #2 – Yawanna Twist (5-1), #3 – Nacho Friend and #9 – Afleet Again (20-1).

The $150,000 Gr.3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita was due to be run last weekend, but hazardous weather conditions forced its postponement until today. A field of ten (10) will travel 1 1/8 mile over the synthetic surface in Southern California, post time is 7:07pm EST. It’s a great betting race because there is no prohibitive favorite. Any one of #2 – The Program (M/L 7/2), #7 – Setsuko (3-1) or #9 – Nextdoorneighbor (5/2) could be the betting publics choice. Only three runners in this group have won a race other maidens…#1 – Marcello, #2 – The Program, #6 – Kettle River (6-1) while all are local runners with experience on both the Santa Anita synthetic or turf courses.

Go with #7 – Setsuko because he seems best bred for this added distance. Others to consider in your exotics should include #6 – Kettle River (6-1), #3 – Outlaw Man (10-1), #9 - Nextdoorneighbor (5/2) and #10 – Alphie’s Bet (8-1).

Enjoy a great day of thoroughbred horse racing. Share the fun with a friend.
