Happy 100th Birthday Laurel Park; Rapid Redux wins 18th straight

October 14, 2011 | Gary Quill

Laurel Park will celebrate 100 years of live racing Saturday with a 100th Birthday Bash and Fall Fest from 12 to 6 p.m. The live card will begin at 1:10 p.m.

The centennial celebration will include a 100th birthday key chain giveaway to the first 3,000 in attendance. The afternoon features family entertainment, a health fair and music in a community village, on-track performances between races, a proclamation from Laurel Mayor Craig Moe, birthday cake for fans and drawings for prizes such as flat screen televisions, iPads and airline gift cards.

Laurel Park debuted on October 2, 1911 under the auspices of the Laurel Four Corners County Fair. The Anne Arundel County track quickly became an autumn fixture on the Maryland racing calendar. I fondly remember the days of the Washington D.C. International, a race which routinely attracted horse from Europe, and at times from Japan and at least once from the Soviet Union.

Mother Nature failed to produce rain this past Tuesday when Rapid Redux, winner of 17 consecutive starts, was entered at Laurel Park in a Starter Allowance Turf race, as a Main Track Only entry. The race was run on the grass, so Rapid Redux was scratched. So the 5 year old gelded son of Pleasantly Perfect, who was just two wins away from the all-time North American record of 19 straight victories held by Zenyatta and Pepper’s Pride, won his 18th straight on Friday night (October 14) at Charles Town. Sent off as the 2-5 favorite in the 8th race on the card, jockey J.D. Acosta took Rapid Redux to the front of the 1 1/8 mile contest right out of the gate. He was pressed throughout the first 6 panels before putting his challenger away, but then was immediately challenged by 7-2 second choice (Smiling Jordan) 2 furlongs out, but was never headed. Rapid Redux got a couple taps entering the stretch and easily pulled away to win by 3 1/2 lengths under wraps at the wire.
