Horse Racing Connection To Ravens Schedule; Pimlico Thursday Thoughts

April 18, 2012 | Gary Quill

It’s amazing that eleven games into the Major League Baseball season, Baltimore has the best team in the American League East, yet the local sports talk and print is dominated by the release of the 2012 NFL Regular Season schedule and the upcoming draft.

It’s no secret that thanks to thirteen consecutive losing baseball seasons, the Orioles play second fiddle to the Ravens in Baltimore. I’m just thankful that the NFL Draft takes place ten (10) days prior to the Kentucky Derby. Because it usually takes a week for all the “who got drafted” talk from all the Armchair Football GM’s to die down. That’s just in time for a quick mention about “the most exciting two minutes in sport” and provide ol’ GQ his 15 minutes of fame on the WNST airwaves.

For those who enjoy the WNST Ravens Road Trips, 2012 provides an opportunity to visit thoroughbred tracks while out of town. Here’s a tip on how to combine your Raven weekend with some short-term investing at the local track.

Sept. 16th @ Philadelphia – Parx Racing

Oct. 7th @ Kansas City – nothing as The Woodlands (race track) closed in 2008.

Oct. 21st @ Houston – Sam Houston Race Park

Nov. 4th @ Cleveland – Thistledown

Nov. 18th @ Pittsburgh – nothing in the Steel City, you’d have to travel 51 miles to Mountaineer Casino Race Track & Resort

Nov. 25th @ San Diego – no track, best bet would be the San Diego Zoo

Dec. 9th – Washington, D.C. – lovely Laurel Park

Dec. 30th @ Cincinnati – River Downs

Recapping selections from Day 10 (Sunday, April 16th) had 6 winners (3 Top Selections) having $2 Exacta in the 8th ($26.00) race; $2 Late Double ($27.80); $1 Pick-3 in races 8-10 ($21.45). The BEST BET of the Day (10 4-2-0) was a well backed at the windows as the 8-5 betting choice and did not disappoint, delivering a gate to wire victory, paying $5.20 WIN, $2.80 PLACE and $2.60 SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (10 0-1-2) was not as kind, went off 13-1 and was no factor throughout the race, finishing 9th. As a friend said concerning this longshot pick, “What were you thinking?!”
