Kentucky Derby Field Starts To Take Shape; Pimlico Sunday Selections

April 14, 2012 | Gary Quill

On Saturday the G1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and G1 Arkansas Derby were the final two big money graded stakes races for 3 year olds. The Blue Grass was won by Dullahan, who outlasted Hansen while the Arkansas Derby was captured by Bodemeister, who held off his stablemate Secret Cricle.

Prior to the Blue Grass, both Dullahan and Hansen were already safely in the Top 20 of graded stakes earnings. Third place finisher Gung Ho earned $75,000 for his efforts, but needed to win in order to get to the Kentucky Derby.

On the other hand, the only way Bodemiester could get to the Derby was with a win. He did just that and now he’s off to Louisville. Runner-up Secret Circle and third place finisher Sabercat also already had enough earnings to get in the Derby starting gate. So in essence they helped those who were precariously sitting on the bubble, hoping not to get knocked out of the Top 20.

Next week there is one final prep race, the $200,000 Grade 3 Coolmore Lexington Stakes, but racing two weeks prior to running in the Derby rarely produces a serious Derby contender. Even so, there will be at least one colt, Reveron, who will run in hopes of a top 2 finish to crack into the Top 20.

Here’s the Graded Stakes Earnings List as of Saturday evening, which include the earnings from the Blue Grass Stakes and the Arkansas Derby. The Kentucky Derby is restricted to 20 starters but for the first time ever, there will be two (2) Also Eligibles in case there are any scratches after the Post Positions are drawn. Those having an asterisk (*) are likely NOT to enter the Kentucky Derby…

Recapping selections from Day 9 (Saturday, April 15th) had 6 winners (3 Top Selections) having $2 Exactas in the 10th ($7.80) and 11th ($56.40) races; $2 Late Double ($26.20). The BEST BET of the Day (9 3-2-0) did not get the trip nor fast pace anticipated, thus finished an uneventful 4th. The LONGSHOT PICK (9 0-1-2) needed a quick start but was checked into the first turn, then was wisely taken back out of contention, finishing 6th @ 7-1 odds.

Had the first four legs of the Pick 5 with the #5 singled in the 9th. Just as well he finished a well beaten 4th since my head probably would have exploded if he gotten beat at the wire by a head bob. Ah the joys and anguish of the multi-race bet…
