Laurel Park: Friday Twilight Racing, Music by Qi-Lo

August 05, 2010 | Gary Quill

Friday marks the first Twilight racing card in Maryland of 2010. No ladies, you won’t see Edward or Jacob there… wrong “Twilight“. At Laurel Park on Fridays, 1st Post is 3:35pm with Happy Hour Specials and FREE Admission, along with Foosball, Air Hockey and Darts in the Horse Wizard Room, Jockey Of The Day Draft, Rody Races. Food and drink specials from 3:30-7:00pm feature $4 appetizers and $2 frozen drinks, drafts and wine. Live music will be performed by Qi-Lo . Here’s a sampling…

What is a “Jockey Of The Day Draft“? If/when a jockey, designated by Laurel Park officials, wins a race, all draft beer will be half (1/2) price from the time that race becomes official until Post Time of the next race. Laurel will make an announcement as to who that jockey is for Friday. Here are my odds on who I believe that jockey will be… Eric Camacho (8-5), Luis Garcia (5-2), Rosemary Homeister, Jr. (3-1), Forest Boyce (7-2), Russell Sheldon (5-1), Josean Ramirez (7-1), Geovany Garcia (10-1) and any other jockey (20-1).

Recapping Day 2 (Sunday, August 1st) selections at the Laurel Park Mini Meet…

Best Bet One Sunday  (#2; 8th race on the turf; 3-1) took a lot of early betting action, opening up at 9-5. Come Post Time he drifted up to 3-1 and put forth a sub-par effort, running late but had  too much ground to make up to be a threat to the top 3 finishers..

Best Bet pick scorecard from 2 selection at the Laurel Mini Meet: 0 WIN – 0 PLACE – 0 SHOW.

Longshot Count On Lou (#1; 4th race on the turf; 5-1) was coming off a layoff and the way the jock rode him tells me that he was just out for the exercise, as he showed early speed but gradually faded in the stretch. He might be one to look for in his next start.

Longshot pick scorecard from 2 selection at the Laurel Mini Meet: 0 WIN – 0 PLACE – 1 SHOW

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day$34 on Misty’s Dispute (#5; 3rd race on turf; 35-1) didn’t stand a chance to finish in the money (aka ITM) in this contest because she went off at odds much higher than her 8-1 Morning Line. That tells you not even the connections are backing her. So true to her Post Time odds, she ran a very dull race, taking the $34 SHOW Parlay play down with her. Luckily we started the Mini-Meet with a reserve to start another parlay on Day 3.

For the Laurel Mini Meet, Day 3 (Friday, August 6th)…

Best Bet:  Agave Ridge  (# 1; 4th race; 7-2)

After dissecting each of the 8 runners in this race, I’ve come to this conclusion… Agave Ridge is the only speed in this contest and as badly as he can quit when on the front end, his jock (Jenna Joubert) should be able to set pedestrian early fractions, thus allowing him to hit the wire first just before he runs out of gas. On the downside, if any other runner challenges him early, he’s cooked and his race will be over before they reach the far turn.

Longshot:    Summer Wind Haley  (# 4; 9th race on the turf;12-1)

Among this 3 year olds 5 career starts is a 5 furlong turf outing where she showed no interest until the final furlong, running it just under 12 seconds. That’s pretty impressive for a maiden and she did it at today’s level ($25k Claiming). I’m not a big fan of the jock (Stevica Djuric), but he has ridden a winner for this trainer (Donna Lockard) in 4 previous mounts over the past year. The pace should be quick early, which should help this gal pick off horses in the last eighth of a mile the way she did in her only previous turf effort.

SHOW Parlay available bankroll: $80 ($114 bankroll – $34 wager + $0 return)

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day:  $20 on Ham And Ernie (# 2; 7th race on turf; 4-1) has yet to get to the Winners Circle in 8 lifetime turf starts, but has finished ITM in 6 of those efforts, while being 4 for 4 ITM on the Laurel sod. In this field of 8, if he comes through with another top 3 finish, his SHOW pay-off should be in the 50% ROI neighborhood.
