Laurel Park Opening Day Focus on Rapid Redux

January 03, 2012 | Gary Quill

All (horse racing interest) eyes from across the country will be on Laurel Park Wednesday afternoon as Rapid Redux tries to extend his North American consecutive win streak record to 22. At 2:56pm EST, a field of eight (8) will be loaded into the starting gate for the 6th race on the winter meet opening day card.

The 6 year old son of Pleasantly Perfect will break from the two hole sporting saddlecloth #3 as he’ll face stiff competition from a duo sent out by John Rigattieri. #1 Awesome Rhythm came up a half length short of ending Rapid Redux’s streak last time out and his stablemate  #1A Ninth Client has been competing quite nicely in allowance company and $20k optional claimers.

Though the distance (one mile) will better suit Rapid Redux than the Rigattieri entry, he’ll be hard-pressed to get and keep the lead early as 20-1 longshot #6 William’s Prayer will be the one controlling the pace in the early stages, testing jockey J. D. Acosta’s patience and trust in Rapid Redux that he can relax behind a horse and rally past the pacesetter in the final furlongs.

UPDATE a/o 10:56am Jan. 4th: LATE SCRATCHES from Laurel include 3 from the 6th race… trainer scratch of #1A Ninth Client and 2 vet scratches (#6 – William’s Prayer & #7 – Walkin’ Boss)

Thoroughbred Times reports that Rapid Redux will recieve a Special Eclipse Award.
