Mario Pino wins No. 6,451 to become 11th winningest jockey of all-time; Sunday Selections at Timonium

August 26, 2012 | Gary Quill

Sandy Hawley. Mario Pino wasted no time in grabbing sole possession of 11th place on the thoroughbred jockey all-time win list on Saturday when he won number 6,451 in the 1st race at Presque Isle Downs. Aboard a 3 year old maiden filly Came Acorkin, Pino got squeezed at the start but rallied the 6-5 favorite to a 2 3/4 length victory.
After a Winners Circle celebration, Pino now focuses his sights on Earlie Fires, who sits at #10 with 6,470 victories. And he’s well on his way to top that mark as he guided his mount in the 5th race to victory. So needing just 18 more wins to become 10th on the list, the question is where will “Super Mario” ride in an attempt to get victory number 6,471? Preseque Isle Downs runs through the end of September, but the Laurel Park Fall meet begins right after Labor Day.

Recapping Day 1 (Saturday 25th) 10 race selections at the Timonium State Fair Meet… had 7 winners (3 Top Selections; payoffs in BOLD) having $2 WIN pay-offs being $4.20 (1st race), $2.40, (3rd), $9.60 (4th), $6.80 (5th), $15.60 (8th), $3.40 (9th) and $4.60 (10th).
Best Bet Kalahari Queen (# 7; 5th race; 2-1) was only second best as he chased the winner returning $2.20 to PLACE and $2.20 to SHOW.

Longshot Tigger Too (# 1; 1st race; 8-1) was game in stalking the winner but flattened out late while holding onto second returning $7.80 to PLACE and $3.80 to SHOW.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day, $20 on Uncle Todd / Easton Jack entry (#1/1A; 9th race; 3-5) turned out to be a winning wager, but even after Easton Jack scratched, the word must have been out on Uncle Todd has he went off as the 3-5 favorite, crushed this field and only returned $2.10 to SHOW. At least we’re still alive heading to Day 3, with $21 in the bankroll.
