More than 500 horses nominated to Preakness Week Stakes; Saturday Selections

While the Preakness is rightfully the centerpiece of the Pimlico spring meeting, fifteen other stakes (six graded) for thoroughbreds will provide a weekend full of excitement for racing fans. A total of 504 horses were nominated to those added-money races.

The $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) and $300,000 Pimlico Special (G3) headline the May 18 card that features six other stakes races. Twenty-nine three-year-old fillies were nominated to the Black-Eyed Susan, including likely favorite Mamma Kimbo.

Thirty-four runners were nominated to the Pimlico Special, including expected starters Alternation, Cease, Eighttofasttocatch, Toby’s Corner and Yawanna Twist.

Forty-two fillies were nominated to the $100,000 Miss Preakness Stakes. Twenty-nine horses were nominated to the $100,000 Jim McKay Turf Sprint. Thirty-seven female turf specialists were nominated to the $100,000 The Very One Stakes, while twenty-nine were nominated to the $100,000 Skipat Stakes. Thirty-six three-year-old fillies were nominated to the $100,000 Hilltop Stakes and another eighteen to the $25,000 Kattegat’s Pride Starter Handicap for Maryland-breds.

The Pimlico racing office will draw the May 18th Black-Eyed Susan Day card on Sunday, May 13th.

The Preakness undercard features seven added money races, including four graded. Thirty-nine top grass specialists were entered in the $300,000 Dixie Stakes (G2). Thirty-seven fillies and mares were nominated to the $150,000 Gallorette Handicap (G3). The $100,000 Maryland Sprint Handicap (G3) features forty-one nominations. Twenty-eight fillies and mares were nominated to the $100,000 Allaire duPont Distaff (G3). Thirty-eight three-year-old sprinters were nominated to the $100,000 Chick Lang. Thirty-nine turf specialists were nominated to the $100,000 James Murphy. There were twenty-eight Maryland-breds on the list for the $25,000 Deputed Testamony Starter Handicap.

Todd Pletcher led all trainers with 29 nominations.

In addition, the $75,000 President of UAE Cup, a G1 race for purebred Arabian horses, drew fifteen nominations. The race is limited to 14 horses and will be run on the main track at 1-1/16 miles.

The Pimlico racing office will draw the May 19th Preakness Day card on Wednesday, May 16th.

Recapping selections from Day 24 (Friday, May 11th) had 4 winners (1 Top Selection) with the $2 Exactas in the 2nd ($13.80) and 4th ($14.60) races; $1 Trifecta in 4th ($11.640) and 2nd ($24.70) races; $1 Pick-3 in races 3-5 ($26.70); $1 Pick-4 in races 2-5 ($45.60).

The BEST BET (24 10-6-3) was game from the start, taking on the betting favorite early but they wore each other down in the stretch, were passed by two rivals but @ 7-1, beat the favorite out for 3rd, returning $3.20 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (24 2-2-8) sprinted right to the lead, got 2 clear entering the stretch, but stopped on a dime at the 1/16th pole, finishing dead last.
