People’s Pink Party at Pimlico on Black-Eyed Susan Friday

May 19, 2011 | Gary Quill

Kudos to The Maryland Jockey Club Racing Secretary, Georgianne Hale, for constructing a terrific racing card on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s card has 13 races featuring the $250,000 Grade2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3 year old fillies (race 10) and the 2nd (annual?) pari-mutuel wagering event where all horses will be ridden by retired female jockeys (race 7). The latter is part of The Maryland Jockey Club teaming up with Susan G. Komen For The Cure for the day with additional events to raise awareness and money for the fight against breast cancer. Two of the participating jockeys, Patti “PJ” Cooksey and Mary Wiley-Wagner are breast cancer survivors. The other ladies in the irons will be Barbara Jo Rubin (first woman to win a race against men at a recognized track), Cheryl White (first African-American female jockey), AbbyFuller, Andrea Seefeldt-Knight, Jennifer Rowland Small and Mary Russ Tortora.

Recapping Day 27 (Thursday, May 19th) at the Pimlico Spring Meet…

Best Bet My Misty’s Echo (#3 3rd race OFF the turf; M/L 9-5; P/T 8-5) took advantage of the fact that none of her rivals were quick enough out of the gate to run with her, not even the 2-5 Post Time favorite, so in the final furlong she was able to hold off the late charges to win by 2 lengths, paying $5.40 to WIN, $3.80 to PLACE and $2.20 to SHOW.

Best Bet pick scorecard from 27 selections at the Pimlico Meet: 10 WIN – 3 PLACE – 6 SHOW.

Longshot Five Star General (#11 7th race M/L 10-1) was scratched, so for the first time during the current Pimlico meet there was no Longshot pick.
