September 23, 2011 | Gary Quill

Not only are there 10 exciting chase scenes to pick and play your favorite horse, Laurel Park is hosting a Crab Feast on Saturday. For $45 per person you can enjoy a hot buffet, crabs (2-5pm), dessert, beer, wine and soda along with the Caribbean sounds of Mama Jama beginning at 1:00pm.

A week from Saturday (October 1st) is Maryland’s Day At The Race. Better known as Jim McKay’s Maryland Million, It’s the one racing day of the year in Maryland where owners of runners either bred in Maryland or their sire was state bred, qualify to run on this great day of celebrating thoroughbred horse racing in Maryland. The Laurel Park racing office announced this morning that a total of 164 pre-entries (151 horses as 13 were cross-entered) were named to the 11 races for the 26th running of this event. First post is 12:35 p.m.

The most decorated of the 151 horses pre-entered is Ben’s Cat. The 5 year old will attempt to defend his title as the Maryland Million Turf Sprint champ. His owner-trainer King T. Leatherbury hopes this is his final prep race for the $1,000,000 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint, for which he earned an automatic berth when he won the Grade 3 Turf Monster Handicap at Parx Racing on Labor Day.

One problem… Ben’s Cat is not Breeders Cup nominated. So if Leatherbury wants Ben’s Cat to compete on racings biggest stage, he’ll have to pony up the $100,000 Supplemental Entry Fee. King is looking for investors to put up the fee, hopefully as a publicity stunt and not because he cannot afford it, because in his last race Ben’s Cat earned over $200,000 and if he wins the MD Million Turf Sprint, he’ll pocket another $60,000. C’mon King, no guts no glory!
