Pimlico and Florida Derby Selections for Saturday

The Opening Day crowd at Old Hilltop consisted of a good mix of grizzled veteran handicappers and novices. Both had similar goals… enjoy a day of short-term investing and soak up the rays from a beautiful sunshiny day. An estimated crowd of 15,000 (give or take a few grand) was treated to FREE Admission and Live Racing Program.

Elsewhere the cream of the 3 year old crop have been racing all winter at Gulfstream Park, and the G1 $1,000,000 Florida Derby caps off the Derby prep races in south Florida. Considering the Kentucky Derby is just five (5) weeks away, this will be the final race prior to the Derby for these runners. Those who desperately need graded stakes earnings to crack into Top 20, which determines who gets in if more than 20 are entered, must put in their best effort as it’s now or never.

A group of nine (9) will break from the starting gate with #6 – Union Rags the 6-5 Morning Line favorite. He was runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November, and was a convincing winner in his 3 year old debut in the G3 Fountain Of Youth stakes. A deserving 2-1 second choice is #8 – El Padrino who has been impressive in each of his 5 career starts, most recently a gutty victory in the G2 Risen Star.

The top two really standout, so if any of the others are going to win, they will need to take a giant step forward. Possibilities to upset are #2 – News Pending (8-1) and #3 – Take Charge Indy (5-1). Those who have already run a race at the Florida Derby distance of 1 1/8 mile are El Padrino, News Pending, #5 – Z Camelot (50-1) and #7 – Bartolome (30-1). I foresee no shockers. Play 6 w/ 2, 3, 5 for exotic wagers.

Recapping selections from Day 1 (Friday, March 30th) had 5 winners (1 Top Selection) with $2 Early Double ($9.80); $2 Exactas in 1st ($22.60) and 2nd ($10.40) races; $1 Trifectas in 1st ($43.80) and 2nd ($17.80) races. The BEST BET of the Day (1 0-0-0) had no excuses as he contended for the lead in mid-stretch but flattened to finish 4th as the 5-2 co-favorite while LONGSHOT PICK (1 0-0-1) ran 3rd at odds of 5-1, paying $2.40 to SHOW.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day, $20 on Wakina (#3; 3rd race; M/L 8-1) was bet a tad down to 6-1 and made a nice run in deep stretch but came up less than a length short for the SHOW purse. Therefore, we’ll try again on Saturday by dipping into the $80 bankroll for another $20 in hopes for getting a winner.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day: $20 on Oasis The Jak (#3; 4th race; 2-1) always gets a check when Julian Pimentel is in the irons, which he is here. Don’t expect much more than 30% ROI, but hopefully it will be a winner to carry on to Day 3.

It’s a beautiful day to go to Opening Day at Old Hilltop. If you have other plans, then make it a point to go on one of the other 27 days. You might actually find yourself having fun. Good Luck!
