No April Fool. For the first time in 2012 Maryland conducts live thoroughbred horse racing on Sunday. Hopefully the fact it occurs on Palm Sunday, won’t deter horseplayers from enjoying 10 exciting chase scenes at Old Hilltop.

Nationally, Fair Grounds in New Orleans takes center stage with their biggest racing day of the year featuring seven (7) stakes races on their 14 race card. The highlight being race 10, the $1,000,000 G2 Louisiana Derby.

A crowded field of fourteen (14) have been entered in this 1 1/8 mile contest with stablmates #1 –Mr Bowling and #1A – Mark Valeski the 2-1 Morning Line favorites. Mark Valeski is the stronger of the two, having lost his last race (G2 Risen Star) by a nose to the highly regarded El Padrino who ran in Saturday’s Florida Derby, finishing a disappointing fourth.

After analyzing this race, there is a good mix of early speed, stalkers and closers. So the winner won’t be one who steals the race going gate to wire while setting slow fractions nor one who who comes from the clouds to pass runners who set a brisk pace. Of the 14 scheduled to run, only one has already run the 9 furlongs distance… #4 – Finnegan’s Wake (15-1). This past Sunday in the Sunland Derby, Daddy Nose Best had the same reusme’ and he won. This angle works a good percentage of the time whether it be graded stakes horses or the lowest level claimers. Go with #4 – Finnegan’s Wake for a Win, Place, Show wager. For an exacta, trifecta and/or superfecta play, also use the #1/1A entry, #7 – Shared Property (12-1), #11 – Rousing Sermon (6-1) and #13 –Afford (20-1).

The BEST BET of the Day (2 1-0-0) went off 8-5 and proved to be the best by winning easily, paying $5.20 3.20 2.60 but the LONGSHOT PICK (2 0-0-1) was bet down to 5-1 but was off the board.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day, $20 on Oasis The Jak (#3; 4th race; M/L 3-1) usually shows early speed but never got near the lead, tried to rally in the stretch from mid-pack, but refused to pass rivals late as he finished 4th.

SHOW Parlay Play of the Day: $20 on the entry of Captain My Captain/Adam’s Nay (#1/1A; 4th race; 9-5) if both parts of this entry run, there is a strong possibility that both will hit the board. This would increase the ROI of the SHOW wager as the SHOW pool would be divided among 2 entries instead of 3. After losing the first two days of the meet, we need this one to restore some confidence. Even if the ROI is 10-20%.

Good Luck!
