Pimlico Friday Picks; 8 Days & Counting Til Kentucky Derby 138

April 27, 2012 | Gary Quill

A relatively quiet day at Churchill Downs as jut one Derby contender, Take Charge Indy put in a workout. The 3 year old son of A.P. Indy worked five furlongs in 1:00.47. He’ll be ridden in the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby by Calvin Borel.

Having Borel in the irons will automatically kill any price those who like Take Charge Indy might be hoping for. Due to Borel’s recent Derby success (winning 3 of the last 5), I predict Post Time odds will be around 9-1 when they should be more like 15-1 or higher. Case in point, last year Borel rode Twice The Appeal, a 20-1 Morning Line longshot and that was too kind. After the early (Friday) wagering, the public bet him down to 7-1, the co-second choice, which was absurd. He went off 11-1 and ran 10th.

Recapping selections from Day 15 (Thursday, April 26th) had 5 winners (3 Top Selections) with the $2 Early Double ($101.80); $2 Exacta in the 2nd ($271.20), 6th ($42.80) and 9th ($60.20) races; $1 Trifecta in the 2nd ($468.20) and 9th ($78.60) races.

The BEST BET of the Day (15 6-5-0) ran a game second at 3-1 (down from 6-1 M/L) returning $4.00 for the PLACE and $3.00 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (15 2-2-3) was a tough luck second, as he lead at every pole, but in mid-stretch jumped the tracks (left by the starting gate tractor) costing him momentum, getting beat a ½ length, paying $5.60 to PLACE and $3.20 to SHOW.
