GQ’s Derby Double Dozen Revisited; Pimlico Picks for Friday the 13th

April 12, 2012 | Gary Quill

At Old Hilltop the fact that it is Friday the 13th shouldn’t scare away any handicappers because there are 10 exciting scenes on tap. After a few days of damp and cooler than normal temperatures, the 13th promises to change the fortunes of the weather pattern as warmer, sunnier, spring-like days return to the Baltimore metropolitan area. Happy Hour from 4pm-7:30pm on the 2nd floor grandstand will help you on the right track (no pun intended) to having a great weekend.

Thoroughbred Times publishes a weekly poll of the leading Triple Crown contenders based on a vote from its editors, reporters, and correspondents. In my February 8th blog, I posted my annual GQ’s Derby Double Dozen. As expected, over the past 2+ months there have been a number of injuries to early contenders, some who just didn’t pan out and the usual late comers. In tandem with the Thoroughbred Times poll is the revised GQ Derby Double Dozen. The number in parentheses, where applicable, indicates the original GQ ranking.

Recapping selections from Day 7 (Thursday, April 12th) had 7 winners (4 Top Selection) with $2 Early Double ($14.80); $2 Exactas in 2nd ($11.60) and 3rd ($116.00) races; $1 Trifecta in the 2nd ($10.10) and 3rd ($303.00) races. The BEST BET of the Day went off 7-1, but ran to his odds by not being a threat at anytime in the race, finishing off the board, as did the LONGSHOT PICK who was in contention early, but faded to 5th at odds of 10-1.
