Pimlico Saturday Selections; Lexington is Last Chance For Castaway

April 20, 2012 | Gary Quill

The final Derby prep race is scheduled to be run on Saturday at Keeneland race course. It’s the $200,000 Gr. 3 Coolmore Lexington Stakes. It’s also referred to as the “Last Chance Derby” because for runners who sit at #21 and up on the graded stakes earnings list, their only chance to start in the 138th Kentucky Derby is to run well in this race.

This year the Lexington Stakes has drawn a field 11 for the 1 1/16 mile event, but only one runner, #7 – Castaway (3-1) has a chance to get to the Derby. With a win here, the Bob Baffert trainee would add enough graded stakes earnings to break into the Top 20 and get into the Kentucky Derby.

Many of the others in here stand just as good a chance to get to the wire first. My choice is #11 – Gold Megillah (10-1). He’s trained by H. Graham Motion and will be ridden by Johnny Velazquez. This duo teamed up to win the Kentucky Derby last year, but that’s not why Gold Megillah is the pick here. Keeneland’s polytrack surface plays like a turf course. Gold Megillah has done his best work on the grass and ran third in his first synthetic surface race ($75k Rushaway) at Turfway Park, his most recent one. In that race, the winner (Flashy Dresser) returned to win his next start ($250k Stakes race @ CT), and the second place finisher in the Rushaway (Gung Ho), ran a game 3rd in last weekends G1 Blue Grass Stakes at 31-1, behind winner Dullahan and runner-up Hansen, both are Derby-bound.

If you get anywhere near the 10-1 Morning Line on Gold Megillah, don’t even bother playing exotics, just load up on Win, Place and Show tickets. But if it’s against your religion NOT to have action on an Exacta, Trifecta or Superfecta, then use these with #11….. #1 – Morgan’s Guerrilla (6-1), #2 – Summer Front (9-2), #5 – Golden Ticket (6-1) and #10 – News Pending (5-1).

Recapping selections from Day 12 (Friday, April 20th) had 8 winners (5 Top Selections) having $1 Pick-3 in races 4-6 ($33.65) and races 7-9 ($209.80); a 50 cent Pick-4 in races 6-9 ($356.15). Too bad no one (including yours truly) played the 50 cent Pick-5 in races 5-9, because it paid $93.70 for 4 of 5 with a Carryover $5,190.63. All 5 winners in this sequence were available among the Top 3 in Thursday picks. Winners were abundant on Thursday, but only managed one $2 Exacta in the 7th ($43.60) race.

The BEST BET of the Day (12 6-2-0) won by 9 lengths while being bet down to the 3-2 co-favorite, returning $5.20 for the WIN, $3.00 PLACE and $2.80 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (12 2-1-2) in a field of 6 was sent off as the 7-2 3rd betting choice (5-1 M/L) and prevailed over a stubborn Todd Pletcher trained (#6) Joe Vann, by a head returning a nice $9.40 to WIN, $5.00 PLACE and $3.20 SHOW.
