Pimlico Thursday Thoughts; 10 Days & Counting Til Kentucky Derby 138

April 25, 2012 | Gary Quill

Derby Week officially started a few days ago. Each of the projected twenty (20) starters have begun to trickle into Louisville to put in their final preparation for the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby.

One 3 year old who will pass the Derby and prep for the Preakness is Isn’t He Clever. Recently moved to the Steve Asmussen barn, the runner-up in the Sunland Derby was on the outside looking in as he was 21st on the graded stakes earnings list. He would have needed a defection from the top 20 who intend on entering the Derby, for Isn’t He Clever to get to the starting gate at Churchill Downs on May 5th.

The biggest Derby news involved the likely Morning Line favorite, Bob Baffert trained Bodemeister. His owners, Zayat Stables sold a minority interest in the Empire Maker colt to Michael Moreno, who races as Southern Equine Racing Stables. Moreno has acquired a number of top-class broodmares in recent years and said he bought into Bodemeister as part of his desire to now move into the stallion game.

All but one Derby riding assignment has been confirmed. Ramon Dominguez’s much anticipated decision on whether he’d ride Alpha or Hansen, came down on Monday. He’ll ride Hansen which means Godolphin Stables who owns Alpha will be looking for a new rider. Don’t be surprised if a jock from across the pond is named. Godolphin is very loyal to their riders, and could easily select a top European rider to guide Alpha in the biggest race of his career. Rafael Bejarano picked up the mount on El Padrino. Colm O’Donoghue will retain the mount on UAE Derby winner Daddy Long Legs. Martin Garcia will ride Liaison.

Recapping selections from Day 14 (Sunday, April 22nd) was the roughest day of the meet by far with just 3 winners (none were Top Selections) having $2 Exacta in the 1st ($33.00) race; $1 Trifecta in the 1st ($58.60) race; $2 Late Double ($13.00).

The BEST BET of the Day (14 6-4-0) ran a game second at 7-2, returning $4.80 for the PLACE and $3.40 to SHOW. The LONGSHOT PICK (14 2-1-3) was sent off at odds of 10-1, showed some early speed but tired badly to finish 7th.
