If anyone saw the Kentucky Oaks today, it instantly became a race they won’t soon forget. The performance Rachel Alexandra put on will almost surely outshine anything anyone of the boys do tomorrow.
She more or less lapped the field by winning by over 20 lengths. Calvin Borel never moved in the saddle for the final eighth of a mile. She could have won bigger. Her time of 1 minute and 48 4/5 seconds was only 1/5th of a second off the stakes record; and as anyone who was watching could see, she could have shattered that if she had needed to. Her time was over a mile and an eighth, but translated to the classic Derby distance it would still be an impressive 2 minutes and 1 second. That time would be good enough to win over half the Derbys run in the last ten years, and she was barely trying. If you haven’t seen this devastating performance, go to http://www.kentuckyoaks.com/2009/videos/3936 and see for yourself.
