Saturday Laurel Park Picks and 3 yr old stakes races

February 24, 2012 | Gary Quill

Both locally and nationally this weekend, stakes races for 3 year old thoroughbreds highlight racing cards.

At Laurel Park on Saturday, the feature race is the $100,000 Miracle Wood Stakes. The prohibitive 7-5 Morning Line favorite for this 7 furlong test is #4 – The Lumber Man. He’s a NY-bred won ships in from Aqueduct where he won his first career race by 9¼ lengths. The son of Grand Slam will take on eight (8) foes hoping to use this race as a stepping stone to the Derby Trail. The top local hope is #9 – Friscan (5-2) who is Triple Crown nominated and was victorious in his first start for trainer H. Graham Motion.

Also on Saturday in New Orleans at Fair Gorunds, the G3 Risen Star Stakes is the feature Derby prep race of the day. The Todd Pletcher trained El Padrino (#7; 2-1) is the Morning Line favorite, coming off a very impressive win at Gulfstream Park. He’s created quite a buzz among wise-guy horseplayers and is expected to live up to the hype and bury his 10 rivals. Though I’m in agreement about El Padrino’s talent level versus this group, those who have the best chance of derailing him are the #1/#1A entry of Mr. Bowling and Mark Valeski (4-1), #3 – Afford (8-1) and #9 – Tizanexpense (10-1). Use these in an Exacta and/or Trifecta combo with #8 – El Padrino.

Recapping Friday’s opinions… three (3) Top Selection winners including the BEST BET ($6.00), Exactas in 2nd ($19.00), 4th ($28.40), 5th ($57.80) and 9th ($16.00) races as well as $1 Pick-4 ($73.70) in races 2-5, $1 Pick-3 ($54.90) in races 3-5 and $1 Pick-3 ($49.00) in races 4-6.
