Saturday Picks for Laurel Park and Rebel Stakes

March 16, 2012 | Gary Quill

Hallelujah!!! The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Er uh, make that “rail”?! Especially at Laurel Park where the turf courses are as green as leprechaun’s shorts for a fine St. Patrick’s Day of racing, where two (2) of the ten (10) races are scheduled to be run on the turf.

Weather permitting March 17th will mark the earliest a turf race is run in the year at Laurel Park. The 5th and 7th races are on Saturday are scheduled to be run on the Fort Marcy and Kelso turf courses, respectively. This will also mark the first turf races of the year in the entire northern East Coast region.

On the national scene, there is only one Derby prep race this weekend. It’s the $500,000 G2 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park (OP). Surprisingly Bob Baffert has entered just one, the 8-5 Morning Line favorite #7 – Secret Circle. Baffert won both divisions of the split Southwest Stakes at OP with Secret Circle and Castaway. Surely the latter will surface in the Illinois or Louisiana Derby. Plenty other Also-Rans from the two Southwest Stakes races are back for more as is the highly anticipated 3 year old debut of #6 – Sabercat (5-1), winner of the $1,000,000 Delta Jackpot last November.

The Rebel Stakes is 1/16th of a mile longer than Southwest Stakes. In addition to picking up 5 lbs. from that race, Secret Circle’s best distance might be one mile. Considering these facts, I think a newcomer, #9 – Atigun (12-1) has the best chance to win. He’s been off since January 15th, but has a great workout pattern and has run the fastest final 2 furlongs in a mile race. If you like to play exotics, then use #3 – Scatman (8-1), #7- Sabercat, #8 – Secret Circle and #10 – Reckless Jerry (12-1). PLAY: 9 w/ 3, 7, 8, 10.

Friday’s 9-race card picks had 7 winners (3 Top Selections) with $2 Early Double ($29.20), $2 Late Double ($20.00), $2 Exacta in 8th ($16.40) race; $1 Trifecta in 8th ($18.00) race. The BEST BET of the Day ran 3rd as the 6-5 favorite returning a mere $2.40 to SHOW while the LONGSHOT PICK went off 24-1 and ran 3rd, paying $9.80 to SHOW.
