Sure Sign of October is Jim McKay’s Maryland Million Day

September 30, 2011 | Gary Quill

Introduced in 1986, the Jim McKay Maryland Million, a program of races restricted to the offspring of Maryland-based stallions, continues to receive strong support from Maryland’s extensive breeding industry, which includes more than 200 farms. Thanks to Jim McKay’s love of his home state and thoroughbred horse racing, Maryland breeders have one day a year that they can stand proud and potentially pickup a few new clients.

Maryland-sired thoroughbreds are nominated before they become 2-year-olds and remain eligible for life to run in the Maryland Million races. After 25 runnings, 217 stallions have sired runners in Maryland Million races. Saturday afternoon, thirty stallions will be represented. First post for the 11-race program is 12:35 p.m. at Laurel Park.

Jim McKay's Maryland Million Day

Not For Love leads all stallions with 23 potential runners. The son of Mr. Prospector, who stands at Northview Stallion Station, is Maryland’s highest ranking stallion for the ninth consecutive year. Progeny of Not For Love have captured 21 Maryland Million races in the last eight years from 147 starters. His sons and daughters could be competing in all 10 races Saturday.

First crop sires Medallist and Scipion will each have four (4) runners on the card. A victory in a Maryland Million race would help justify a raise in their stud fee. Medallist stud fee was $4,000 while Scipion fetched $5,000 for his services.
