The Jim McKay Maryland Million Day: Picks for 12 exciting chase scenes

September 26, 2009 | Gary Quill

The races on this day at Laurel Park are restricted to the offspring of Maryland-based stallions. Thankfully, it continues to receive strong support from Maryland’s extensive breeding industry, which includes more than 200 farms. Every Marylander should read this mornings Baltimore Sun Sports section page 1 article, “Far from stable” (at link below) to understand why slots revenue is necessary for the long-term survival of Maryland horse breeding farms.

After 23 runnings of this event, 203 stallions have sired runners in Maryland Million races. Maryland-sired thoroughbreds are nominated before they become 2-year-olds and remain eligible for life to run in the Maryland Million races.

Not For Love leads all stallions with 32 starters on the MD Million card. The son of Mr. Prospector, who stands at Northview Stallion Station for $25,000 a live foal, is Maryland’s highest ranking stallion for the seventh consecutive year. Progeny of Not For Love have captured 16 Maryland Million races in the last seven years. His sons and daughters will be competing in 10 of the races, including five of the eight starters in the Oaks.

The ghost of Allen’s Prospect continues to leave its mark. Four of his sons and daughters are entered to run. Allen’s Prospect, who passed away in 2003, was Maryland’s leading sire for many years and the standard bearer of Country Life Farm. He has been responsible for 152 starters and 21 winners, the most of any stallion during the previous 23 runnings of the Million.
