Thursday Picks for Laurel Park and March Madness

March 14, 2012 | Gary Quill

Thursday March 15, 2012 is anticipated to be the most unproductive work day of the year. As is the first day of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament every year. Thanks to modern technology, workers are able to keep track of their bracket selections via the internet either through their office computer or Smart phone.

Until recently I was an avid college basketball fan, using vacation days on the Thursday and Friday of the opening round games. Not sure what has changed. Maybe the realization that I’d rather put a $100 into an afternoon at Laurel Park instead of donating it via a number of bracket pools.

Though my interest in March Madness is at an all-time low, I’ll still want to watch a fair share of games, although my personal favorite announcer, Gus Johnson, won’t be behind the mic. What genius at CBS Sports made that decision?!

Since prognostication is what I do, my obvious choice to win the title is…

Murray State Racers

… located in the Blue Grass state of Kentucky, one look at MSU’s logo makes the Murray State Racers my sentimental favorite.

Thursday’s 9-race card picks had 8 winners (4 Top Selections) but the entire day was very “Chalky”. $2 Early Double ($26.80), $2 Late Double ($9.00), $2 Exactas in 4th ($44.20) and 6th ($8.20) races; $1 Pick-3 in race 7-9 ($13.00) and $1 Pick-4 ($20.00) in races 6-9. The BEST BET of the Day WON paying $4.80 3.00 and 3.20 (that’s correct) but the LONGSHOT PICK was off-the-board (OTB).
