Union Rags Silences His Critics, Wins Belmont; Colonial Downs Selections for Sunday Afternoon June 10th

June 10, 2012 | Gary Quill

Congratulations to Union Rags on winning the 144th running of the Belmont Stakes. Jockey John Velazquez gambled and won as he road the rail entering the stretch, just behind Paynter who had led every step of the way. A fate would have it Paynter drifted just far enough off the rail with less than a 1/16th to the wire allowing Union Rags to slip by to his inside to prevail by a neck.

Many horse racing experts, including myself , throughout Union Rags’ 3 year old campaign had doubts that the he could win at the classic (Derby) distance (1¼ mile and beyond) due to the fact his sire, Dixie Union had never produced an offspring that had won a race beyond 1 1/8 miles. That is, until Saturday in the Belmont Stakes. His loyal supporters pointed to his dam’s side which had the stamina required to get the longer distance. Even though the final running time was painfully slow, the fact remains Union Rags is a G1 winner. He earned a 95 Beyer Speed figure for his effort. As a friend pointed out this morning, Union Rags maybe be the most heralded 3 year old who never earned a triple-digit Beyer.

Recapping selections from Saturday, June 9th had 5 winners (3 Top Selections) with $2 WIN pay-offs being $31.80 (1st race), $6.40 (3rd), $3.60 (4th), $4.80 (5th) and $6.00 (7th). Both the BEST BET of the Day (3 2-0-0) went gate to wire as the 2-1 2nd betting choice paying $6.40 4.80 2.40 while the LONGSHOT PICK (3 0-0-1) lost a photo for the runner-up @ 6-1 returning $2.80 to SHOW.
