WIN$day Picks for Laurel Park; Near Triple Dead Heat

March 20, 2012 | Gary Quill

Last Friday at Laurel Park, three horses nearly equaled a rare feat in the sport of thoroughbred horse racing. A Triple Dead Heat for the win!

In the 7th race on March 16th at Laurel Park for $13,000 Claimers Milwaukee Chief, Arctic Raven and Let Me Be Frank provided a thrilling finish (photo on the right). Appearing to hit the wire together, but the result of the photo showed that #6 – Milwaukee Chief and #8 – Arctic Raven crossed the Finish Line simultaneously while #1 – Let Me Be Frank was just a nose behind, between the winners in third. Yes, there are three (3) horses in the above photo (courtesy Jim McCue/MJC).

From my research the last triple dead heat occurred on October 7, 1991 at Belmont Park ironically in a $13,000 Claiming event. The most famous Triple Dead Heat, and only one in a stakes race also took place at a New York track (Aqueduct) in the Carter Handicap on June 10, 1944 (photo below) when Brownie, Bossuet and Wait A Bit crossed the line at the same time.

1944 Triple Dead Heat

It should be noted that the photo-finish camera had been in existence at racetracks only since the mid to late 1930’s. Prior to the photo-finish camera, the decision on finishes was left to the placing judges whose only source was their memory of a split second in time.

Saturday’s 10-race card picks were posted prior to scratches and technical difficulties prohibited an update after scratches were announced. With that being said, post had 7 winners (3 Top Selections) with $2 Early Double ($53.80), $2 Late Double ($16.80), $2 Exactas in 1st ($26.80), 4th ($17.40), 7th ($71.40) and 10th ($19.60) races; $1 Trifectas in 4th ($45.70) and 7th ($85.80) races; The BEST BET of the Day was scratched but and the LONGSHOT PICK ran second @ 6-1 paying $6.00 PLACE and $3.80 SHOW.
