COLLEGE PARK, Md. – For the 12th-straight year the University of Maryland men’s lacrosse team will compete in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship tournament. The Terps, which received the No. 7 seed with an at-large bid, will play Cornell on Sat., May 10 at 5 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
The Terrapins (11-3) are making their 37th NCAA tournament appearance, while the Big Red (11-4), which earned an at-large bid out of the Ivy League, will be making their 26th appearance in the tournament field.
Maryland and Cornell have played 16 times with the Terps holding a 13-3 series advantage. The Terrapins and the Big Red last played just a season ago in the first round of the NCAA tournament when Cornell defeated the No. 6-seeded Terps, 16-8, en route to a Final Four berth.
Prior to last season, the two teams had not met since 2000 when the Terps won, 8-7, at the Big Red. This will be the fourth meeting between the two programs in the NCAA tournament. Maryland and Cornell met for the 1971 and 1976 NCAA championships with the Big Red winning both of those meetings. The Terps won the 1974 meeting in the semifinals.
This marks the fifth time that Maryland has been named the No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Terps were previously a No. 7 seed in 1982, 1991, 2007 and 2008. In 1982, Maryland lost a first round game to Johns Hopkins by a 14-9 margin. In 1991, Maryland advanced to the Final Four, but lost to Towson, 15-11, in the semifinals. The 2007 Terps were upset by UMBC in the first round by a score of 13-9, while the 2008 team defeated Denver in the first round, 10-7, before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 2 Virginia, 8-7 in overtime.
The winner of the Maryland/Cornell game will meet either No. 2 seed Syracuse or the winner of the Siena/Bryant game in the quarterfinals on Saturday, May 17 at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. The Orange will host the winner of Siena/Bryant on Sunday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m. The other quarterfinal matchup in Hempstead will come from the winners of No. 3 Loyola/Albany and No. 6 Notre Dame/Harvard first round games.
