BALTIMORE – The Loyola University Maryland women’s lacrosse team earned the No. 6 seed in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and will host Pennsylvania in a first round game at Ridley Athletic Complex on Sunday, May 13 at 1 p.m.
Loyola (13-5, 7-1 BIG EAST) earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the BIG EAST title for a second-straight year on Saturday. Penn (9-7, 6-1 Ivy) earned an at-large bid after falling to Dartmouth in the finals of the Ivy League Tournament on Sunday.
This will mark the 14th time in program history that the Greyhounds have advanced to the NCAA Tournament. It will also be Loyola’s second-straight appearance under head coach Jen Adams.
The Greyhounds hold an all-time record of 12-14 in thetournament, including an 8-6 mark in first round games.
Although the Greyhounds have not faced Penn since 2005, Loyola holds a 15-4 advantage in the all-time series, including winning the last 13 meetings. The Quakers own the lone NCAA Tournament meeting though, knocking the Greyhounds out of the tournament in 1983 with a 9-5 victory. That game marked Loyola’s first ever in the NCAA Tournament.
The winner of Sunday’s game will advance to the quarterfinal round to face the winner of No. 3 seed Maryland vs. Massachusetts next weekend. The semifinals and finals of this year’s NCAA Tournament are scheduled for May 25 and 27 at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y.
