Fletcher, Herreweyers Earn ECAC Weekly Awards
CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Loyola University Maryland men’s lacrosse players Zach Herreweyers and Joe Fletcher were named the ECAC Lacrosse League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday after helping the Greyhounds to a pair of road victories last week.
It marked the second week in a row that Fletcher received the defensive honor and the second week in a row a Loyola attacker has earned offensive laurels. Herreweyers follows Justin Ward who was the Co-Offensive Player of the Week last Monday.
Herreweyers continued to make an impact in the starting lineup for the Greyhounds, scoring seven goals in wins at Georgetown and Michigan.
The freshman from Canada had hat tricks in both of the games, scoring a career-high four goals in a midweek contest at Georgetown and following that with three goals on Saturday at Michigan.
In his three starts – including the March 16 game against Air Force – Herreweyers has scored at least three goals in each game and has 10 this season. This past week, he tallied his seven goals on just 13 shots, an outstanding .538 shot percentage.
Fletcher continued his standout play on the Loyola defense, helping Loyola allow just a 11 goals in two victories this week, an average of 5.5 per game. The Greyhounds yielded just two combined first-half goals thanks to Fletcher and his teammates, one each at Georgetown and Michigan.
In Wednesday’s win at Georgetown, Fletcher had a team-high six ground balls while causing three turnovers, and he held his marking responsibility (Zach Guy) without a point. He then turned in a four ground ball, three caused turnover performance at Michigan.
The Preseason First Team All-American also helped Loyola clear the ball at a 95-percent success rate this week. Through nine games this season, Fletcher has picked up 37 ground balls and caused 13 turnovers.
Loyola is back in action with an ECAC game on Saturday, March 30, in Columbus, Ohio, against The Ohio State Unviersity.
