ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Patriot League champion Navy women’s lacrosse team achieved another program milestone on Sunday night when the NCAA announced the Mids earned the No. 8 seed for the NCAA Tournament and will host first and second round games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Navy (18-1) will host Monmouth (13-6), the Northeast conference champion, on Friday at 5:00 PM in the NCAA First Round. Duke (12-5) will face Princeton (10-6) Friday at 7:15 PM. Duke and Princeton received at-large berths.
The winners from Friday’s games will meet on Sunday at 12 noon in the NCAA Second Round.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children for each day. Parking at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium is $5. Live statistics and live streaming video will be available.
The Mids are ranked seventh in the latest national RPI rankings, No. 11 in the deBeer Media Poll and No. 17 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll. Duke is ranked No. 7 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll, while Princeton is No. 15. Monmouth is unranked.
Navy defeated Monmouth, 16-4, during the regular season on February 24. Navy built up a 16-1 lead before the Hawks scored three goals in the game’s final 2:25. Navy also defeated Monmouth in 2012, 13-4, and in 2010, 17-5. Navy is 0-1 all-time against Duke and has never played Princeton.
Navy is making a fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament in its sixth year as a varsity program. Navy fell to No. 5 North Carolina, 14-7, in the first round last year. The Mids enter the tournament on a program-record 12-game winning streak.
Head coach Cindy Timchal is taking a team to the NCAA Tournament for a record 25th time. Timchal is 29-16 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and won eight national championships while at Maryland.
Senior attacker Jasmine DePompeo (Sayville, N.Y.) leads Navy with 120 points (55 g, 65 a). DePompeo is a Tewaaraton Award nominee and a three-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year.
Junior attacker Aimee Gennaro (Berwyn, Pa.) has 75 points (59 g, 16 a) and sophomore attacker Loren Generi (Bayport, N.Y.) has 72 points (59 g, 13 a) and a team-high 103 draw controls. Sophomore goalie Annie Foky (Charlottesville, Va.) is 16-1 with a 7.03 goals-against average and a .457 save percentage.
Navy earned the Patriot League’s automatic berth by defeating Holy Cross, 14-4, in the conference tournament final at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on April 28. Navy went a perfect 6-0 in conference play to host the postseason tournament for the second-straight year.
The NCAA Tournament has expanded from 16 to 26 teams for the 2013 season. The field consists of 13 conference champions and 13 at-large bids. The top-eight seeds host the first two rounds from May 10-12 and the top-six teams receive byes to the second round. The quarterfinals will be held on campus sites from May 18-19 and the semifinals and championship will be May 24-26 at Villanova.
