Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Freshman Joe Seider and sophomore Chris Vetter each scored hat tricks as Towson (4-2) claimed a 12-9 win over Marist (2-3) at Tenney Stadium Friday night.
Marist opened the scoring just 15 seconds into the game, but the Tigers responded by stringing together a five-goal run in the first quarter and a stretch of scoring seven of eight goals over the second and third quarters. It was Seider’s second career hat trick and Vetter’s first. The 12 goals were Towson’s highest single-game total this season.
The Red Foxes scored the game’s opening goal after a miscue on the face-off. But Towson’s Seider, Vetter (two goals), senior Devin Grimaldi and senior Thomas DeNapoli all scored in the opening scoring five-goal rally to give the Tigers a 5-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
Marist stayed in it at the start of the second, decreasing the Tigers’ lead to 5-3 after back-to-back goals from Mike Begley and Drew Nesmith. However, freshman Ryan Drenner answered Nesmith exactly a minute later to keep Towson up by three at 12:46. His tally kicked off the Tigers second scoring run of the game that gave them an 11-4 lead at 4:08 in the third quarter.
Marist ended a nearly 15-minute scoring drought with a goal from Begley at 13:16 in the third – the Red Foxes’ lone goal during that Tiger scoring rally.
However, Marist held Towson scoreless in the fourth quarter and chipped away at the Tigers’ lead. The Red Foxes outscored the Tigers 5-0 in the final quarter, but Towson held on for the win.
Towson faces a quick turnaround as the Tigers host Navy on Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. in Unitas Stadium.
