TOWSON, Md. – Co-captains Thomas DeNapoli and Greg Cuccinello each scored two goals to lead Towson men’s lacrosse (2-2) to an 8-7 win over Georgetown (2-1) Saturday afternoon at Unitas Stadium.
The Tigers outscored the Hoyas 3-0 in the third quarter to provide the cushion they needed to withstand the Hoyas’ late run. DeNapoli had a six-point day, as he assisted on four of the Tigers’ goals on the day. Georgetown rallied late, scoring three goals to Towson’s one in the fourth quarter.
Georgetown scored first at 13:35 in the first quarter when Charles McCormick found the back of the net unassisted. Freshman Ryan Drenner answered for the Tigers just three minutes later, with the assist to DeNapoli. However, a failed Tiger clear led to a fast-break Hoya goal from Peter Conley at 6:13 in the first. Georgetown led 2-1 at the end of the frame.
Towson kicked off the second quarter with a goal from sophomore Ben McCarty in his first game of the season after an injury. He scored from inside five yards off a pass from freshman Mike Lynch at 12:02.
Senior Max Siskind received a feed from DeNapoli and scored from just outside the crease to give the Tigers their first lead of the game, 3-2, at 3:24. Georgetown’s Devon Lewis and Conley scored back-to-back to put the Hoyas back on top, 4-3, at 1:14.
The Tigers took the momentum into the second half when Cuccinello whipped a shot past Georgetown keeperJake Haley with six seconds left before the half to tie the game at 4-4.
Senior Devin Grimaldi (13:43), DeNapoli (11:08) and Cuccinello (2:13) each scored for the Tigers to helpTowson shut out Georgetown in the third quarter and take a 7-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
Eduardo White tallied his second of the season for Georgetown at 12:57 in the fourth quarter to end an 18-minute Hoya scoring drought. Despite the Hoyas outscoring the Tigers 3-1 in the final frame, Towson held on for the win.
Next up, Towson hosts Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
