Towson sees six game win streak snapped at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Despite four goals from freshman Joe Seider, Towson Lacrosse had its six-game win streak snapped with a 9-7 loss at Hofstra Saturday evening at Shuart Stadium.

It was a tightly contested matchup until Hofstra was able to hold the Tigers scoreless for nearly 17 minutes between the third and fourth quarters. Towson was able to get to within one, 8-7, at 7:08 in the fourth, but Hofstra scored on a rebound to seal the win.

In addition to Seider’s four goals, senior Thomas DeNapoli added three points (1g, 2a). Torin VarnSam Llinares and Korey Hendrickson each had two goals for the Pride.

Anthony Zappone struck first for the Pride, just 2:34 into the game when Hofstra capitalized on a caused turnover and scored on a fast break. DeNapoli had a hand in Towson’s first two goals, scoring the early equalizer at 10:15 and assisting Seider’s tally at 7:01 first quarter that put the Tigers in front, 2-1.

However, Hofstra standouts Llinares (2g) and Drew Coholan strung together three goals to put the Pride back ahead, 4-1. Greg Cuccinello struck at 7:51 for Towson, from his favorite spot 15 yards out. Seider and DeNapoli teamed up again with 2:07 left in the half to help the Tigers go into the break tied with Hofstra, 4-4.

Towson and the Pride traded goals to start the second half. After Seider’s second goal at 11:21 in the third quarter. Hendrickson and Varn each tallied a goal to put Hofstra up, 7-5, at the start of the fourth quarter. Seider scored his fourth of the game – an EMO tally off an assist from Justin Mabus - with 9:26 left in the game, as the Tigers trailed the Pride, 8-6.

Senior Max Siskind scored from close range at 7:08 fourth quarter to inch the Tigers to within one, 8-7. However, Varn picked up a rebounded save and whipped it past sophomore Tyler White to score his second tally of the game and give Hofstra its final lead.

The Tigers stalk up to No. 14 UMass on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
