BALTIMORE – UMBC Head Lacrosse Coach Don Zimmerman announced the Retrievers’ 2014 spring schedule today, which features an early four-game homestand and home contests against all three America East opponents which competed in the 2013 league championships.
The early home slate is highlighted by a Saturday, March 8 contest versus Johns Hopkins University. The Blue Jays will visit UMBC for just the third time in twelve overall meetings.
“Our 2014 season promises to be an exciting one. Along with our always competitive America East Conference opponents Albany, Stony Brook, Binghamton, Hartford and Vermont, our out-of-conference schedule includes traditional-in-state rivals Maryland, Hopkins, Towson and Mt. St. Mary’s,” Zimmerman said. “In addition, the team looks forward to a tough road game at High Point as well as hosting first-time opponents in Monmouth, Richmond and Mercer.”
The Retrievers open the 2014 slate against Maryland in College Park on Saturday. Feb. 15. UMBC has faced-off against Maryland 35 previous times, but has never opened the season versus the Terrapins. The 2013 clash, scheduled for Byrd Stadium, was postponed due to inclement weather.
UMBC makes its home debut and opens the four-game homestand when they welcome Monmouth to UMBC Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 22. A week later, the Retrievers host Richmond – both the Hawks and Spiders are making their NCAA Division I debuts in 2014.
After UMBC takes on Johns Hopkins, they conclude the homestand versus Mercer on Tuesday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Coach Zimmerman’s squad concludes the non-conference schedule with three consecutive games on the road, beginning with a return match at High Point on Saturday, March 15. The Retrievers stay in-state with games at Towson (Tues., March 18) and Mount St. Mary’s (Sat., March 22).
The Retrievers open America East play by entertaining Stony Brook on Friday evening, March 28. After a Sunday, April 6 date at Binghamton, UMBC faces two teams that it competed against in the 2013 America East Tournament. Hartford visits UMBC Stadium on Saturday, April 12 and 2013 champion Albany closes out the home schedule by bringing their high-powered offense to Baltimore on Saturday, April 19.
UMBC completes the regular season on Saturday, April 26 when they visit Vermont.
For the second consecutive year, Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium will host the league semifinals and championship game. The semifinal doubleheader is set for Thursday, May 1, with the championship game taking place on Long Island on Saturday, May 3.
Notes: UMBC will face Monmouth, Richmond and Mercer for the first time in program history and will also make their maiden trip to High Point… UMBC had played Maryland in 31 consecutive years until the postponement of 2013… The Retrievers have won four of the last six meetings between their in-state rivals… The Retrievers are still in search of their first victory over Johns Hopkins (0-11)… Robert Morris (0-2) is the only other program that UMBC has contested and does not have a win against… With a narrow 10-8 victory last season, UMBC improved to 20-0 versus Mount St. Mary’s… The meeting in Emmitsburg in 2014 will be the first since 2000… The Retrievers will attempt to make their 11th consecutive tournament appearance in 11 America East seasons… The contests versus Hartford and Albany will be America East lacrosse doubleheaders, with the men competing in the nightcaps on April 12 and 19.
