UMBC opens lacrosse season Saturday at Maryland

The UMBC men’s lacrosse team is set to open its 2014 campaign at in-state rival No. 6 Maryland (1-0) on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Byrd Stadium. The opening draw is set for noon and streaming is available on Terps’ TV.

UMBC returns seven starters from last season’s 7-8 squad, which reached the America East title contest. Senior attackman Matt Gregoire (28g ,2013) and sophomores Pat Young (32-7-39) and Nate Lewnes (14-10-24) are expected to lead the Retriever offense. SR face-off specialist Phil Poe is a two-time America East First Team honoree, while the Retrievers will have a new goalkeeper between the pipes in the 2014 debut.

Maryland opened the campaign with a 16-3 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Feb. 8.

The Retrievers open their seven-game home schedule by welcoming Monmouth in the Hawks’ NCAA Division I debut on Saturday, Feb. 22 (1:00 p.m.).
