BALTIMORE, August 21, 2013 — The reigning world champion U.S. Men’s National Team will host tryouts at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md., from Aug. 30-Sept. 1. The three-day tryout will see 94 premier professional and collegiate players vie for 46 spots on Team USA.
Ultimately, 23 of the 46 players selected on Labor Day weekend will compete for the U.S. as it goes for a record 10th world title at the 2014 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championships, hosted by US Lacrosse on July 10-19, 2014, in Denver, Colo.
In all, 40 players in the tryout pool have Baltimore ties by way of collegiate alma maters or current professional team. The Chesapeake Bayhawks will send an MLL-best 17 players to tryouts, including 2010 U.S. team returner Drew Westervelt (UMBC). Returning gold medalists Brendan Mundorf (Denver Outlaws, UMBC), Stephen Peyser (New York Lizards, Johns Hopkins), Paul Rabil (Boston Cannons, Johns Hopkins) headline a list of 30 players who played college lacrosse in the Baltimore area. Longtime rivals Johns Hopkins (12) and Maryland (9) will send the two largest contingents of alumni to tryouts, along with four representatives from UMBC, three from Loyola, and one each from Navy and Stevenson.
Additionally, U.S. team head coach Richie Meade led the Navy men’s lacrosse program from 1994-2011, where he guided the Midshipmen to a 142-97 (.589) record in 17 years. Meade is currently the head coach at Furman (S.C.), which will begin play in the 2014 season.
