Another Blow For Terps, Gary: Kim Academically Ineligible

January 27, 2009 | Glenn Clark

I’ll be starting my live blog soon; but this press release from the University of Maryland is worth noting for its news value. Maryland freshman forward Jin Soo Kim has been ruled academically ineligible for the spring semester (the semester began yesterday here in College Park).

Kim has appealed the suspension; but will not be eligible to play until a resolution is reached. He is sitting on the bench tonight in a suit and tie.

If you’ll remember, Kim was not cleared to join the team until after practice had already begun; just days before Maryland’s exhibition opener. He joined the team a season earlier than he was originally committed for; as Maryland had a scholarship open up. The school noted in the release that “Kim is enrolled in a university program to students for whom English is a second language.”

The last player to be declared academically ineligible for a semester was Chris McCray during the spring of his senior season. At the time, Gary said the event was the first time something of that nature had happened to him in his career.

As I’ve jokingly quipped to a few people in the media area; Gary needed some good news……
