Maryland Madness Set for October 14

Celebration of new basketball season starts at 9:30 p.m.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The annual celebration of Maryland Madness, which tips off the new season of basketball at Comcast Center, is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14 beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Admission will be free and doors open at 9 p.m.

The event will mark the 40th anniversary of the first Midnight Madness, which began on the Maryland campus when former head coach Lefty Driesell took his squad to the track at Byrd Stadium for a midnight conditioning run.

This year’s version will introduce the men’s and women’s basketball teams to the public.

The Maryland men’s team will hit the court for its first practice the next day featuring a young squad that features two seniors, a junior and new head coach Mark Turgeon.

The Terrapin women’s team, ranked as high as 11th in one preseason poll, returns four starters from last year’s team that reached the NCAA Tournament and went 24-8.

Maryland Madness this season will feature scrimmages by both squads, a men’s alumni game and performances by the dance team, spirit squad, pep band and the Maryland Gymkana Troupe.

The start time will allow fans who will attend the men’s soccer game vs. Duke that evening enough time to return to Comcast Center for Maryland Madness.

More information will be released in the coming days on
