Opening Day has always been a yearly tradition for me and members of my family. For the past several years it has always been me, my sisters, their boyfriends, and my stepdad going up to Pickle’s Pub to take in the pre-game festivities. Unfortunately several years ago, I wasn’t old enough to drink. Not that I wanted to anyways, especially with the stories I heard as a child of the “unholy” beverages that would be served throughout the place. All I wanted to do on Opening Day was watch baseball and have fun doing so. For many others, that may not be the case. And even though she didn’t stay in the city, my mom was always on hand to pick us up every single year from the Baltimore bars. Whenever she does decide to take in the Opening Day festivities, she’ll have free rounds waiting for her.
Whenever I got my ticket for Opening Day, I always went to watch the game. It didn’t matter if it was the Boston Red Sox or even the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, to me Opening Day is Opening Day. My routine was this: go through the gate, grab some Boog Powell’s pit beef, pick up an ice cold lemonade, sit down, and enjoy the scenery. The only part I disliked was waiting for my drunken friends to step out of the bars and into the ballpark. Let’s play the “numbers game” with this. Out of 10 friends I wait for, 4 friends show up to the game. And they don’t get there until the bottom of the 5th inning!
This always had me pondering the question that should be on an annual Opening Day survey: Do you go to Opening Day for the game or for the parties? I knew many people who bought tickets but were so caught up in the drinking and partying that they didn’t even bother to show up! Who can blame them, though? Opening Day is what I like to call, St. Patrick’s Day: Version Orange. It’s one of the most fun day’s one Baltimore native or sports fan can enjoy. I would love to know what you guys do on Opening Day!
