Tonight’s Orioles Lineup

July 31, 2009 |

This weekend the Orioles will host the Boston Red Sox for a three game set downtown at Camden Yards.  Tonight’s opening game is scheduled to begin at 7:05pm, but stay tuned with stormy weather in the forecast for the Baltimore area later on in the day.

Both teams should be familiar with their counterpart’s starting pitcher, as both Jeremy Guthrie and John Smoltz pitched against the opposition and took losses when the O’s and Sox battled this past weekend at Fenway Park.

Guthrie has been mostly mediocre at the top of the Orioles rotation through his 20 starts this season.  Overall he’s posted a 7-9 record while registering an above-the-league-average 5.21 ERA.  In Boston six days ago, Guthrie gave up five earned over 6.2 innings and was out-pitched by Jon Lester in the Red Sox 7-2 victory.

John Smoltz, now 42-years old, will get his second look at the young Oriole lineup and will hope to fair far better than he did last Sunday.  Led by Nick Markakis’ 3 RBI’s, the O’s lit up Smoltz for six runs over just five innings of work in a game the O’s eventually won 6-2.  In six starts on the year, Smoltz is 1-4 with an inflated 7.04 ERA.

As for the starting lineup:

Brian Roberts – 2B
Nolan Reimold – LF
Adam Jones – CF
Nick Markakis – RF
Aubrey Huff – 1B
Ty Wigginton – 3B
Luke Scott – DH
Matt Wieters – C
Cesar Izturis – SS

With the club trading George Sherrill to the Dodgers yesterday for two prospects, the O's will most likely now look to Jim Johnson to handle 'the closer' responsibilities (Courtesy: AP)
