Tonight’s Orioles – Tigers Lineups

May 28, 2009 |

Tonight at 7:05pm the Orioles will take on the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a four-game weekend series downtown at Camden Yards.  There’s no denying the upbeat feeling around the O’s recently, they’ve won five out of their last six, are fresh off a home sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays, and super-prospect Matt Wieters is expected to play his first game with the club tomorrow night.

Not only has the winning baseball been outstanding to watch, but what may be even nicer is seeing all the new faces on the roster making immediate, solid contributions.  Two days ago in his major league debut, Jason Berken picked up the win after pitching five strong innings in defeating the Jays, and yesterday in exceptionally dramatic circumstances, rookie left-fielder Nolan Reimold sent the O’s home as walk-off winners after hitting a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 11th inning to finish off the sweep.

Another productive member of the Oriole farm system will make his first appearance on a major league mound tonight, 24-year old David Hernandez.  The 6’3, 215lb right-hander has made eight starts so far this season for Triple-A Norfolk and has put up eye-popping statistics.  Hernandez is 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA and has shown a great ability to miss bats at the minor league level.  His power sinker has enabled him to be near the top of the International League leaderboard with over 12 strikeouts per nine innings, and a 4.62/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.  Fourteen of Hernandez’s 60 K’s in 43.1 innings at Norolk came in his last outing in Rochester, New York on Friday.

The Tigers will counter with 27-year old right-hander Armando Gallaraga, who has struggled mightily as of late.  Gallaraga will be doing cart-wheels when the calendar month turns to June; after starting the year with a perfect 3-0 record and ERA under 2.00 in the month of April, Gallaraga has gone 0-4 with a 9.92 ERA in four starts in May.  Last week at home against the Rockies, Gallaraga allowed four runs over 5.1 innings and took the loss in the eventual 4-3 Colorado win.
