Believe it or not the start of another college lacrosse season is upon us. Navy and UMBC held a scrimmage yesterday and the regular season starts in 2 weeks when Navy hosts VMI on Feb. 7 at noon in Annapolis. For your viewing and planning pleasure I am going to list the top games happening in the state this spring and give a reason to attend each game.
Feb 14- Ohio State @ Navy 12:00 An early measuring stick game.
Feb 21- Towson @ Loyola- 1pm These two teams struggled at times last season and this game will give an indication if the struggles will continue.
Feb 28- Face Off Classic at M&t Bank Stadium
12:00 Princeton/Hopkins- These two teams always play dramatic games and this should be no different.
2:30 Maryland/Duke- How legit will the Terps be this season? How will the Blue Devils be in the the post Danowski and Greer era.
March 10- Bryant @ Loyola- See Zach Greer and his new teammates make the transition to division one.
March 14-15- Maryland travels to UMBC at 1pm on Saturday and hosts Bryant on Sunday at 1pm. These two games will be a nice test for the Terps. UMBC has given Maryland fits in recent years and they will have no prep time for Zach Greer the following day.
March 21- Virginia @ Hopkins 8pm- Only in state appearance by the preseason #1 Cavs. The Blue Jays have some holes to fill and this game will be a stiff test to see if they are filled or not.
March 28- Syracuse @ Loyola noon and Gettysburg @ Salisbury 1pm. You have a nice choice here. You can either see the only in state appearance by the defending National Champion Orange or drive to to the Eastern Shore and see Gettysburg who barely lost to the Sea Gulls twice last season try again to snap a winning streak which stands at 45 games entering the season and an even longer home win streak. Both streaks shoiuld still be intact unless there is a major upset early in the season.
April 3- Maryland @ Navy 7pm. If you like physical contact this game is for you. These two teams don’t like eachother and it shows when they meet.
April 4- Albany @ Hopkins Noon and Stevenson @ Salisbury 7pm. Albany has given the Blue Jays everything they wanted the last 3 seasons including an upset victory in 2007. Stevenson will be trying to be the first Capital Athletic Conference team to beat Salisbury since the league started in 1994. Salisbury escaped Owings Mills with a win during the reguiar season and had a easier time in the confernce tournament final.
April 11- “Day of Rivals” at M&T Bank Stadium. You get Army/Navy at 11:30 am and Maryland/Hopkins at 2pm. These are two of the best rivalries in college sports and to get them in one place is a huge treat for lacrosse fans.
April 18- Navy @ Hopkins 2pm. Navy has lost 35 straight to the Blue Jays but the games are always close and eventually Navy has to win one.
April 25- “War on the Shore”- Salisbury @ Washington College 1pm. This is another classic battle. These two teams always play hard and usually there is a highlight reel hit in this game. Salisbury has dominated lately but WAC will be hungry to avenge the losses.
