Teich On The Initial Watch List For The Doak Walker Award
ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Senior fullback Alexander Teich is on the initial watch list for the 2011 Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top running back.
The field of 51 candidates will be reduced to 10 semifinalists on November 11 and the recipient will be named live on ESPN on December 8.
Teich was Navy’s second-leading ground gainer in 2010, rushing for 863 yards and five touchdowns on 147 carries. He also caught seven passes out of the backfield for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He led the Mids in all-purpose yardage with 1,344.
He became the first Navy running back in school history to rush for over 200 yards against Notre Dame when he torched the Irish for 210 yards on 26 carries in Navy’s 35-17 rout. Teich also caught a screen pass with one hand and took it 31 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of the game to set the tone for the day.
Teich also had a big day in Navy’s 76-35 win over East Carolina, rushing for 157 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries.
Teich, who was elected offensive team captain by his teammates, and the rest of the Midshipmen open up the 2011 campaign at home on Sept. 3 against Delaware.
