Navy Wins and Doesn’t Pass

October 28, 2008 |

The Navy Midshipmen won a football game 34-7 over SMU on Saturday and never attempted a pass. As many of you know Navy runs a triple option offense. This offense is run oriented. Usually Navy will throw over the top of the defense to keep them honest and allow the running game to function without extra people in the box. On Saturday thanks to horrible weather conditions Navy ran 77 offensive plays and all of them were runs. They ended up with 404 yards on the ground. Sophmore quarterback Ricky Dobbs who will start next season had 42 carries for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns. He doesn’t have a full grasp of the offense yet so most of those were option plays where he held on to the ball.

The last team to not throw a pass for an entire game was Ohio University who did it in a 21-17 win over Akron exactly 11 years earlier on Oct 25, 1997.

Navy is now 5-3 on the season. They host Temple this Saturday at 3:30 in their last game in Annapolis. With a win Navy qualifies for the Eagle One Bowl to be played Dec 20 at RFK Stadium in Washington DC.
