Game Recap: Wizards 95, Spurs 94 (3OT)
It took triple-overtime for the Washington Wizards to defeat the San Antonio Spurs 95-94 in the final quarterfinal game of the Samsung NBA Summer League 2014. The Wizards (5-0) will take on the Sacramento Kings (4-1) on Sunday in the semi-finals. The Spurs went 4-2 in the summer desert classic.
With 36 seconds left in the game Vander Blue hit a three-point jump shot to tie the game at 81, neither team would score in the final seconds forcing overtime to decide the game. Austin Daye connected on a pair of free throws with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 84. Glen Rice Jr. hit a three at the buzzer to force triple overtime.
Rice scored a game high 36 points and pulled down a team high 11 rebounds for the Wizards while Otto Porter scored 27. Austin Daye scored a team high 27 points for the Spurs while Bryce Cotton added 16.
In the opening quarter of play the Spurs earned a one-point lead, 21-20, after trailing by as many as five early in the quarter. Daye and Green powered the Spurs offense with six points apiece while Porter led the Wizards with eight.
The Spurs blew the game wide open when they went on a 20-1 run and led by as many as 17 in the second quarter. The Wizards answered with a 9-2 run to end the quarter, San Antonio took a 49-39 lead at the half. Daye continued to lead the Spurs offense with eight points in the quarter while Kyle Anderson added five. Daniel Theis tallied six for the Wizards.
Washington answered back in the third with a 17-2 run of their own in the period and finished up 63-61. Rice scored 12 points for the Wizards while Porter added five. Deshaun Thomas and Cotton each scored four for the Spurs.
The two teams traded baskets in the fourth quarter, neither team leading by more than four points. The quarter featured seven lead changes and was tied up twice. Rice led the Wizards with seven points while Blue added seven for the Spurs.
