Forecasting the 53, Mocking the Mighty Men, Reckoning the Ravens Roster

August 22, 2011 | Thyrl Nelson

Here’s my first of possibly many projections of this year’s “53 Mighty Men of Baltimore”.

Quarterbacks (3)

Joe Flacco, a veteran not yet on the roster and Tyrod Taylor.

(There’s a popular school of thought that the Ravens may wait until after week 2 to fill the backup role so as not to have to guarantee the QB’s contract. If so it would open up a spot for one of the first out, but could leave Flacco without much of a net for the first 2 weeks.)

Running Backs (5)

Vonta Leach, Ray Rice, Ricky Williams, Anthony Allen & Jalen Parmele.

(Parmalee was my 53rd guy, but his kick return role makes him a good bet. If kickoff returns are as diminished as everyone seems to think though, this may not be as important.)

Wide Receivers (6)

Anquan Boldin, Lee Evans, Torrey Smith, Tandon Doss, David Reed & LaQuan Williams

(Williams being the long shot. It still wouldn’t surprise me to see TJ Houshmandzadeh back as the 6th and the Ravens trying to stash Williams on the practice squad. Justin Harper and Marcus Smith might be looking at put up or shut up time.)

Tight Ends (3)

Ed Dickson, Dennis Pitta & Davon Drew

(It wouldn’t surprise me to see Jonathan Stupar instead of Drew here or probably even both with Parmalee being the likely victim and David Reed turned to for kick returns,)

Tackles (4)

Michael Oher, Jah Reid, Ramon Harewood & Mark LeVoir

(Still the most likely place for the Ravens to seek a veteran at the end of camp, IMO)

Guards (3)

Ben Grubbs, Marshal Yanda & Oneil Cousins

Centers (2)

Matt Birk & Jason Murphy

Special Teamers (3)

K- Billy Cundiff, P- Sam Koch & LS – Morgan Cox

Defensive Line (6)

Haloti Ngata, Cory Redding, Pernell McPhee, Arthur Jones, Terrence Cody & Lamar Divens

Linebackers (8)

Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson, Jameel McClain, Dannell Ellerbe, Jason Phillips, Sergio Kindle & Paul Kruger

Cornerbacks (6)

Chris Carr, Jimmy Smith, Lardarius Webb, Cary Williams, Chykie Brown & Domonique Foxworth

(Foxworth could still wind up being a cap casualty if the Ravens think they can live with their corner depth and look to invest his salary elsewhere)

Safeties (4)

Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard, Haruki Nakamura & Tom Zbikowski
