I have to share this with you, partly because it’s pretty funny, and also because there may be someone else who shares this opinion.
Last night, I was at an establishment with my basketball team. I went to the gas station afterwards and a man approached me. He says, ” Are you Rob Long?” Now, because he called me Rob, it indicated that he probably knew me from either radio or coaching. Outside of those two places, I’m Robert.
I told him I was, and he told me he recognized me from the internet. He then asked me what was it about Kyle Boller that I hated so much. I immediately thought of the times when I was one of the few people in the local media who defended Boller. I thought of the times when Casey and my media friends made fun of me because I predicted a “Banner Season” for Boller in 2005. I then asked, “Why do you think I hate Boller?” He replied, “It just seems like you guys don’t support him very much.”
Now, I hate when my opinion is thrown in with everyone else. If one person on our station has a stance about something, it appears that I get grouped with that person, for some reason.
I told him I don’t hate Boller, and I was sorry for giving him that impression. His next comment almost knocked me off of my feet. He says, “I thought, maybe, you liked McNair better because he’s a black quarterback.”
I didn’t know how to tell him this, but Anthony Wright is black, and he plays quarterback. I broke the news to him. I also informed the man that Troy Smith is black, and I’m not endorsing playing time for him either. In fact, back when everyone was calling, asking for Wright, I said, “I hope you get Wright so we can put this to rest. He’s no good.”
I like McNair because of the resume he brings, and no one can deny that. If you look at the man’s career, he’s one of the best quarterbacks of his era. He was the starting quarterback on a team that went 13-3, a year after they went 6-10 without him. That’s why I favored McNair over Boller. If the two quarterback’s could exchange career results, I would favor Boller. I want to win.
Now, I’m not even going to defend the racial comment. For those who know me as Robert, they would laugh at that accusation. It just amazes me how race comes into everything. I want to win.
